Mutts vs Purebreds

Mixed breed dogs, also known as mongrels and mutts, are dogs that do not belong to a single organizationally recognized breed and results of non intentional breeding. While purebreds are a pure strain of dog breed obtained through many generations of controlled breeding for desirable traits. Dogs in general are wonderful companions, regardless if they are purebred or mixed bred mutts.

Benefits of Owning Mutts

When you get a purebred dog, all you are getting is a definite lineage. No matter pure bred dog or the lovable mutt, there is no guarantee of health and temperament.  But with mixed breeds there are many reason for adopting a mutt. For one you get multiple breeds in one dog, so you get the best of both worlds! Its also proven that mutts are less prone to genetic diseases that are more likely for a purebred to have. Mutts are also much cheaper to obtain and maintain. To get a purebred dog can cost  hundreds or thousands of dollars, where as a mutt can be free or very low cost if you are adopting them from an animal shelter.

My Mutts and How They Are The Best

In September of 2012, I brought home two of the most precious puppies I’ve ever seen. And yes, they were mutts! Lab mixes that I had found on Craigslist. They were the only two girls in a litter of seven and they were GORGEOUS! Its a mystery what they could be mixed with because even though they are sisters, they look entirely different. Keeva has a more lab like body is brindle! Where as Shilah is golden like a Golden Retriever and has a very small build. They both however have the same long fur and a tail that curves up and has long fur hanging from it. Definitely not your typical lab short hair and short hair tail.
They are incredibly smart and at seven months, both have learned sit, come, their names, roll over, handshake, stay, free and “go to bed”. We always receive complements on them! All this, in two beautiful FREE mutts.

So I encourage you to weigh your decisions carefully when choosing a dog. Not all the best ones are purebred or cost hundreds or thousands of dollars. Some of the best dogs areMUTTS and a come free of low cost at a shelter. Rescue an animal and he or she will be the best companion you’ve ever had.
